Ingredient notes

  • Tahini – Shop your local ethinc food store for this stuff, quality matters!
  • Chickpeas – The cheaper way to go is to make your chickpeas from scratch, you can make them in a larger patch which is good for serving a big group of people. Or out of convenience grab a the canned ready to go version like I do.
  • Pine nuts – These are optional, other garnish options could be roasted garlic, roasted bell peppers or just some extra lemon.

How to make this authentic hummus recipe

All you need is a handful of ingredients, most of which you probably already have in your pantry. In lieu of a food processor, a high-speed blender like a Vita-mix or Nutri-bullet will work just fine. Follow the steps below!

What you need to make this Authentic Hummus Recipe

  • 1 can of chickpeas (15 ounces)
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/3 cup tahini
  • Juice one lemon or 2-3 tablespoons
  • 1/4 cold water
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • Pinch of white pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • Garnish with fresh parsley, smoked paprika, and pine nuts (optional)

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Puree the first seven ingredients in a food processor or high-speed blender until smooth. Tahini, cold water, olive oil, cumin, salt, garlic, and lemon.
  2. Add in the chickpeas. One can, rinsed in warm water and drained.
  3. Puree for 3-4 minutes, or until smooth. Just keep it going until the hummus is nice and smooth, pausing once or twice to scrape the sides down. If the hummus seems too thick, feel free to add in an extra tablespoon or two of water too.
  4. Taste and season. Give the hummus a taste, and add in extra salt, cumin, and/or lemon juice if needed.
  5. Garnish and serve. Transfer it to a serving bowl, add any toppings you’d like, and enjoy!
