The BEST Gluten-Free Teriyaki Beef and Broccoli

Who doesn’t love a good Teriyaki Beef and Broccoli dish? We cut all the additives and added sugar and made this the healthy version of the course. I recently discovered the Big Tree brand and fell in love. This coconut amino-based sauce is a delicious choice for my fellow health-conscious eaters.

Ingredient notes:

  • Steak – For a lean choice I use flank steak either from Sprouts or Costco. Use your favorite cut of meat or whatever you have on hand.
  • Broccolini – (Regular) Broccoli has a slightly bittersweet flavor with thick, meaty stems.  Broccolini is more mild and sweeter in flavor, with crunchy stems, and leafy florets. Fun fact:  Broccolini is not baby broccoli. It’s actually a hybrid; it was created in 1993 and is a cross between broccoli and Chinese broccoli.
  • Teriyaki Sauce – We all know and love anything teriyaki, but it’s usually full of sugar. The Big Tree brand does a great job of creating products without soy, gluten, or refined sugar. The sweetness comes from Coconut Blossom Nectar and is even better than the other stuff!

Substitutions and variations:

  • Teriyaki sauce – Big Tree also has a none teriyaki sauce that is labeled just coconut amino that has become a staple in my pantry.
  • Broccolini – Regular broccoli or veggie medley would make great substitutions. Zucchini, asparagus, and squash come to mind.
  • Rice – Make it a complete meal with some brown jasmine rice, quinoa, or even some roasted potatoes.

What you’ll need to make this teriyaki Beef and Broccoli

  • 1 lb flank steak or steak cut of your choice
  • 1/2 cup Big Tree Farms Coconut Amino Teriyaki
  • 1 bunch organic broccolini
  • 1/2 tbsp olive oil or avocado oil
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Rinse the meat under cold water while you warm a skillet to medium heat with a light spritz of oil.
  2. Pat-dry the meat and season it with pepper and or seasonings of your choice.
  3. Place the meat in the heated pan and cook each side for about 7 minutes-cooking time is fully dependent on the thickness and cut of the meat, here I have used about an inch thick, flank steak (from Sprouts).
  4. Remove steak from heat when cooked to the desired temp and let sit for 5 minutes. Cube up meat and place back in heated pan. Coat meat chunks in Big Tree Teriyaki sauce and toss for about a minute.
  5. In a separate pan, heat about a tsp of olive oil/avocado oil (or desired about) to medium-high heat. Add broccolini, season, and cook for about 5 minutes, toss frequently.
  6. Plate and enjoy!

Is teriyaki sauce gluten-free?

No, not usually. Most conventional teriyaki sauces are made with soy sauce which contains wheat.

Can you marinate meat in teriyaki sauce?

Absolutely, I would aim anywhere from 30 minutes to overnight.

How do I cook teriyaki chicken/beef on the stovetop?

Heat a pan on medium for about one minute, spritz a little oil and place the marinated meat in the pan. Using a meat thermometer or gauging the thickness of the meat, cook both sides equally. You might find it helpful to pour a little water into the pan and place a loose lid on top to cook the center of the meat faster.
